This past spring, MICHAEL FRIED, the celebrated critic, historian and poet,
delivered the prestigious Andrew W. Mellon lectures at the National Gallery
of Art in Washington-six talks on THE MOMENT OF CARAVAGGIO. This fall,
under the aegis of the New York Institute for the Humanitites at NYU, he
will BE reprising two of those talks in New York City..
Michael Fried is the J.R. Boone Professor of Humanitites and the director of
the Humanities Center at Johns Hopkins University, and one of the foremost
authorities on evolving traditions of realism in Western painting. His
books include "Absorption and Theatricality: Printing and Beholder in the
Age of Diderot"; "Realism, Writing, Disfiguration: On Thomans Eakins and Stephen
Crane"; "Courbet's Realism"; "Manet's Modernism" and the just released,
"Menzel's Realism: Art and Embodiment in Nineteenth Century Berlin."
The New York Institute for the Humanities at NYU was established in 1976 for
promoting the exchange of ideas between academics, professionals,
politicians, diplomats, writers, journalists, musicians, painters, and other
artists in New York City-and between all of them and the city. It currently
comprises 120 fellows. Throughout the year, the NYIH organizes numerous
public events and symposia such as December's memorable Art and Optics
conference.
