EDUCATION: Graduate of Sweet Briar College, Va. (Phi Beta Kappa; Highest Honors in English) Further studies at the University of London and the Sorbonne

FIRST N.Y.C. EMPLOYMENT: The French Film Office, where she wrote and edited a bulletin and newsletter on French films

CRITICISM: 1970-1988, Member of New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics; began reviewing in 1966 as theatre critic for The Village Voice; was subsequently staff film critic for The Voice and Viva; New York Magazine; and Vogue

Wrote monthly columns for the Guardian UK and the New York Observer. Articles and essays have appeared in: The New York Times (and New York Times Book Review), Esquire, The New York Review of Books, The Nation, Glamour, Film Comment, Town and Country,The New Leader, Mademoiselle, Mirabella Lectures on film at numerous universities; was Associate Professor at Barnard, Fall-Winter 1989, ("Writing on Film"); and Adjunct Professor of Film, Columbia University, 1991-1995; taught Non-fiction Writers Workshop, Marymount Manhattan, 2001; Sarah Lawrence Graduate Writing Program, 2004.

Has served on the selection committee of the New York Film Festival, as a juror at the Sundance Film Festival and was for seven years the Artistic Director of the Sarasota French Film Festival

FILMS MADE: A short documentary on sculpture by women in New York and an interview with Louise Nevelson, for WNET-TV, New York

MEDIA: Is serving as co-host, with Robert Osborne,on Turner Classic Movies Essentials 2006-2007; Appearances on the Today Show, the Tomorrow Show, the Mike Douglas Show, CBS Morning News, MSNBC, AMC and Turner Classics documentaries Appeared regularly as a reviewer on Special Edition for Public Television Served as regular reviewer on All Things Considered for National Public Radio
